Frequently asked questions
Clear answers about permits, the SAAQ, our courses, payment and rentals. Still unsure? Call either branch.
Permits & SAAQ
What do I need to get my learner’s permit?
You must be at least 16 and complete phase 1 of the course at a recognized driving school: five theory modules and a 24-question exam in class. Once you pass, the school gives you a certificate. You then get your learner’s permit at a SAAQ service centre, where you fill in a medical declaration and take an eye exam. Applicants under 18 need parental consent. Check saaq.gouv.qc.ca for the documents to bring.
How can I take an appointment for my learner’s permit?
How long must I keep my learner’s permit before the road test?
At least 12 months before the road test, and at least 10 months before the SAAQ knowledge test. During that time you complete phases 2 to 4 of the course.
Who can drive with me while I have a learner’s permit?
When you are not with your instructor, you must be accompanied by someone who has held a valid licence for the same class for at least two years.
How do I book the SAAQ road test?
You book it directly with the SAAQ once you meet the requirements: call the SAAQ at 1 800 361-7620 or book through your SAAQclic account. On test day you must bring a vehicle in good working order. You can rent one from Omega, with pickup at your choice of branch.
I have a licence from another country. What do I do?
Driving licence exchange conditions vary depending on the country of origin. If your country appears in the following list, you are admissible for a licence exchange without a test because these countries have similar licence issuing standards to those of Quebec:
- Germany
- Austria
- Belgium
- France
- Great Britain: England, Wales, Scotland
- Isle of Man
- Northern Ireland
- Japan
- Netherlands: Holland, Dutch Antilles (Saint-Maarten, Aruba, Bonaire, Curacao, Sabat and Sint Eustatius)
- Republic of Korea (South Korea)
- Switzerland
- Taiwan
If your country does not appear in the above list, please contact us or the SAAQ at 1 800 361-7620 for further details.
Courses
What is the difference between the beginner course and refresher lessons?
The beginner course is the full SAAQ program for new drivers: 24 h of theory on Zoom and 15 h of in-car driving. Refresher lessons are private in-car hours (1 to 12) for people who already have a permit or licence.
Is the theory online or in a classroom?
Theory is given live on Zoom: 12 classes of two hours with a certified instructor.
Are courses offered in English and French?
Yes, at both branches. You choose your language when you register.
Can I choose my instructor or my schedule?
Yes, you can pick your instructor, depending on availability. You also tell us your availability (weekdays, evenings, weekends) when you register and we build your schedule around it.
Do you offer automatic or manual driving lessons?
We only offer automatic driving lessons. All our cars are automatic, for lessons and for road-test rentals.
I started my courses elsewhere and I would like to switch over to Omega. Is this possible?
Absolutely! If you started your courses in another driving school and, for any reason, you want to continue at Omega, you will need to ask the other school for a certificate indicating the courses already completed and, from there on, register at Omega. We will take into account the certificate and the courses that you have already completed elsewhere.
I will soon be 16 and I am interested in starting driving courses. Can you tell me when I can start my courses?
You can start the theory lessons a few weeks before you turn 16. Once you are 16, with your Module 5 test successfully completed and your certificate in hand, you can go to the SAAQ to obtain your learner’s permit.
Payment & instalments
Can I pay in instalments?
Yes. The beginner course ($1,130 plus tax) is paid in 6 instalments tied to the course phases: $250 at the start of phases 1 and 2, $199.81 at the start and halfway point of phase 3 and at the start of phase 4, and a final $199.79 halfway through phase 4.
Are taxes included in the price?
No. The beginner course is $1,130 plus tax ($56.50 GST and $112.72 QST); its 6 instalments ($1,299.22 in total) include GST and QST. Each course page shows the price and taxes separately.
Which payment methods do you accept?
We accept cash, debit, credit and e-transfer. You can also pay online by credit card when you register.
Are SAAQ fees included?
No. Fees for the knowledge test, road test, permit and licence are paid directly to the SAAQ.
What is your refund policy?
Before the course starts, we refund everything you paid. After the course starts: you can still cancel at any time. You pay only for the services you have already received, plus a penalty of no more than $50 or 10% of the price of the services not yet received, whichever is less. Details are on our refund policy page.
