How to Get Your Driver's Licence in Québec, Step by Step

How to Get Your Driver's Licence in Québec, Step by Step

To get a Class 5 (passenger car) licence in Québec, you complete the SAAQ's mandatory Road Safety Education Program at a recognized driving school, hold a learner's licence for at least 12 months, pass the SAAQ knowledge test and road test, then drive on a probationary licence for 24 months.

Québec Class 5 licence timeline: Phase 1 at month 0, learner’s licence around month 1, knowledge test after 10 months, road test after 12 months, then 24 months probationary.

The mandatory course at a glance

The course lasts at least 39 hours: 24 hours of theory in 12 two-hour modules, plus 15 in-car sessions of 55 minutes with an instructor. Theory and driving alternate across four phases, so what you learn in class gets practised on the road. At Omega, theory classes are online and you can pay in six instalments.

The steps

  1. Register with a recognized driving school. You must be at least 16 to get your licence.
  2. Complete Phase 1 (theory modules 1 to 5). They cover the vehicle, the driver, the environment, at-risk behaviours and evaluation. Passing Phase 1 lets you apply for your learner's licence. At Omega, most students get there in about a month.
  3. Get your learner's licence at the SAAQ. You need it before your first in-car session.
  4. Phases 2 to 4: alternate classes and in-car sessions. Phase 2 lasts at least 28 days and Phase 3 at least 56 days. Your instructor evaluates you on the road at sessions 5, 10 and 15.
  5. Take the SAAQ knowledge test once you've held your learner's licence for 10 months.
  6. Take the SAAQ road test once you've held your learner's licence for 12 months. In-car session 15 is your final review.
  7. Drive on a probationary licence for 24 months, with zero alcohol and a 4-demerit-point limit.

How long does it take?

At least 12 months from your learner's licence to your road test, because of the SAAQ minimum waiting periods, then 24 months on a probationary licence. The course fits inside the learner period. Booking in-car sessions early and keeping a steady pace keeps you on track for test day.
